Answers for 6 - 8

It will be helpful to draw a diagram of the row of cottages and to label the positions of the rooms definitely established by the eight statements given. Statements 1, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 allow us to fill in the diagram plan as follows :

[ An ’ X ’ indicates a proven vacancy ]

The second and sixth statements indicate that Rose and Eliza are neighbors and that Eliza lives next to a vacant cottage. Hence, they must live in the row opposite to Jim and Sandra. They may live on either side of the vacant cottage.

Statement 8 indicates that there are no vacant cottages in Jim’s row . Statement 7 indicates that Shane and Jim live in the same row. Statement 1 indicates that Jim and Alan live at opposite ends of the rows. As there are no vacant cottages, we assume that Jim and Alan live in the same row.

Thus, the floor plan can be drawn as follows:

  1. D
The plan above indicates that either Jim or Alan lives across from Rose.

  2. A
Again, the plan indicates that two people live in Rose’s row.

  3. E
The new tenant might move into any of the three vacant cottages. Hence, his next door neighbor cannot be determined.
