Chapter 21

Babbitt attends the luncheon hosted by the Booster's club that coincides with its annual elections. All the distinguished members including Vergil Gunch and Lucas Prout are present on the occasion. After the introductory speeches, the elections are held. Babbitt is chosen as the Vice President. He feels honored and excited.

When he returns back to the office, Myra tells him that Paul has shot Zilla. Paul is in jail and Zilla is in the hospital.

This chapter contains some of the most dramatic incident of the plot, though it is revealed only by a third party. Babbitt has had a wonderful day; he is elected Vice President of the Booster Club. All his aspirations to be someone important in society are justified. But the news that his dearest friend Paul has shot his wife shocks and frightens Babbitt, and his good day is completely ruined.
