THEMES

Main Theme

WinnieÂ’s challenging spirit or her determination to fight against all odds is the main theme. The motive to live instead of taking an easy way out, like committing suicide, is seen in Winnie. Sustaining oneself, all alone in a tough world, is not a simple task. Feminine potential is put to test, which finally succeeds in the war raged against patriarchy and dogmatism.

Minor Theme

The minor Themes center around the strong bonds of friendship and loyalty, that exists between Winnie and her friend Helen. Also, the force of true love, which comes to the rescue of the most helpless person, finds a solution to his problem. In the miserable life that Weili leads with her arrogant husband Wen Fu, Jimmy Louie emerges as a silver lining. Her intense love for Jimmy gives her the strength to fight against Wen Fu and ultimately succeed. One also notices the contrast in the personalities of Wen Fu, Jimmy Louie and Gan.

MOOD

"The Kitchen GodÂ’s WifeÂ’ is a family story involving episodes of war. Shades of optimism and pessimism run throughout the novel. There are times when the entire atmosphere is depressing, even harrowing. At times, the characters arouse fear in the mind of the reader. But such serious scenes are interspersed with lighter ones. The beginning and ending chapters, involving family matters, are much lighter. It can be certainly said that the mood, in general, is lively, intense and gripping. The pace of the narrative is such that the reader is never allowed to pause or sit back.
