Wen Fu

Wen Fu is the first husband of Winnie. He seems to possess the most ignoble traits, present among men. He is a self-centered egotist, a cunning opportunist, a rapist, a big bully and a coward of the worst type.

One of the most unfortunate events in WinnieÂ’s life, is her marriage with the pilot, Wen Fu. He is not even qualified to be a pilot. He becomes a pilot as he takes over his brother Wen ChenÂ’s name and credentials. This is a clear indication of the fact that Wen Fu is totally devoid of any moral values. For him, a wife is nothing more than a prostitute. He has no dignity or respect for women. For him, sex is nothing but a game in which he has to always emerge as the winner. He subjects Winnie to the worst kind of humiliation and makes her beg for forgiveness, for no fault of hers. He always wishes to prove that he is her supreme commander and that she has no existence without him.

His attitude towards the co-pilots is just about the same as with his wife, though not so terrible. His wants the people around him to look at him with awe and always be afraid of him. He is a big bully and he gets some strange pleasure in terrorizing and victimizing others.

In spite of all his domination over other people, he is a real coward when an emergency situation arises. When all the other pilots lay down their lives for the sake of their nation, Wen Fu somehow manages to save himself from the Japanese attacks. The number of pilots dwindles each day, but no harm ever befalls Wen Fu. Wen Fu is all the time concerned for his own safety and his plane deliberately flies over those places where there is no danger. Instead of bombarding the Japanese planes, his aim is to rescue his own plane. This clearly reflects his cowardice.

For Winnie, Wen Fu is nothing but a pain in the neck, which just cannot be treated. But Winnie, mustering all her strength, manages to overpower him and her burning the statue of the Kitchen God symbolizes her revenge on Wen Fu.
