CONFLICT

Protagonist: In this romantic comedy, there are three male protagonists and two female protagonists. The first of the men is Claudio. Claudio is a war hero and a romantic. Of all the returning soldiers, he is the most honored for bravery. He also falls in love with Hero at first sight. The second is Benedick. Also a war hero, he is most well known for his self-proclaimed bachelorhood. He is tricked into falling in love and giving up his much-touted single life. The third is Don Pedro. He is the only hero without a heroine.

Hero and Beatrice are the heroines. They are paired with Claudio and Benedick, respectively. Hero is sweet-tempered and demure. Beatrice is bold and fiery. They are total opposites in temperament, but the best and most loyal of friends.

Antagonist: The chief antagonist is Don John. He nurses his grievance against his brother, Don Pedro by plotting several evil and unkind plots to ruin Claudio, whom he hates for defeating him in battle. He is melancholic and disdainful. Like most illegitimate sons in Shakespearean plays, he does not apologize for his conduct. His character does not undergo any change in the course of the play. Borachio assists him in his evil exploits.

Climax: The climax occurs in the church scene when Don John's plot succeeds, and Hero's wedding to Claudio is cancelled. Hero is disgraced and swoons. She is left for dead

Outcome: The play ends on a joyous note. The villainy is exposed, the perpetrators caught. Hero and Claudio wed. Beatrice and Benedick wed. All the characters celebrate and dance.
