Chapter 55

Summary This chapter is filled reveals a couple of sad events. Grandma Rommely has passed away, and Evy's husband leaves her. When Flittman competes as a one-man band at a movie house, he wins ten dollars and never comes home again.

There is also good news for Francie. Ben has come back into her life and helps her study for the entrance examination. When she passes the exam, she prepares to enter college as a permanent student. Ben also gives her a ring, but wants her to finish college before they make any definite plans. She will have five years to think about their relationship and come to a decision about their future.


Notes

Although Francie still occasionally thinks about Lee, she is glad that Ben has come back into her life. With his tutoring, she is able to pass the entrance exam and be admitted to college. Ben shows he seriously cares about Francie, giving her a ring; but he does not want to discuss any definite plans about their future for five years.
