Scene VIII

Inez tells her story next. She admits that she was always called "a damned bitch" on earth; therefore, her damnation began prior to her arrival into Hell. She tells about her six-month passionate affair with Florence, a married woman whom she literally consumed. During the affair, both of them had been cruel to Florence's husband, who was Inez's cousin. He threatened to kill himself but did not have the guts to carry through with it. In the end, he was run over by a tram, which shocked Florence. Upset by the death of her husband and feeling used by Inez, Florence reacted by turning on the gas in the stove and going back to bed with Inez; both of them died of asphyxiation.

Notes

As expected, Inez's story is very realistic. She admits that her life on earth was really Hell, and since she was a "damned bitch" on earth, her existence has not changed greatly because of her death. She tells how she had a passionate affair with Florence and inflicted cruelty on her husband. She also admits that she tried to control all of Florence's thoughts and actions. In the end, a frustrated Florence kills Inez and commits suicide by turning on the gas and letting it run all night.
