The British were the last to establish colonies
in the New World. 13 colonies were set up which later came under
the British crown. The British began to colonize for various religions
and economic reasons. To pay monetary debts, the crown gave charters
to colonies in the New World. Secondly, the Puritans could not stay
in Britain after the fall of the Protectorate under Oliver Cromwell.
With the Anglican monarchy back in power, the Puritans had to flee
their country in fear of religious persecution.
