Example 13

Find the equation of the line having slope -2/3 and passes through (2 , - 5).

Solution :

y - y1 = m ( x - x1)

\ y - (-5) = (x - 2)

\ y + 5 = (x - 2)

\ 3 (y + 5) = 2 (x - 2)

\ 3y + 15 = 2x + 4

\ 2x + 3y + 11 = 0 ( general form )

Example 14

Find the equation of the line having slope and which crosses y-axis at 4.

Solution :

y = mx + c

y = x + 4

\ 3y = - 4x + 12

\ 4x + 3y - 12 = 0 (general form)
