CHAPTER 20 : THE ENVIRONMENT

20.0 Introduction

Man in modern times, faces a great ecological crisis, namely the pollution of his environment. This same environment had once been uncontaminated and quite hospitable for him. We may regard environmental pollution as the unfavorable alteration of our surroundings. This is largely because of man’s actions. It is also because of direct or indirect effects of changes in energy patterns, radiation levels, or an abundance of organisms. It is only in the latter half of this Century that man realized that the planet that they were living in was being threatened by pollution and over-exploitation which were the results of greed and ignorance. During the 1980’s some of the governments passed laws to protect the environment. Some scientists however believed that, we might be already too late in our efforts.
