Example 1

A ladder reaches the top of a building. The lower end of the ladder is 25' apart from the base of the building. The angle of elevation of the ladder is 640. Find the height of the building and length of the ladder.

Solution

Let 'h' be the height and 'l ' be the length. The adjoining fig. illustrates the conditions of the problem.

\ Height of the building = 51.25 ' \ length of the ladder = 57.02'.

Example 2

An observer O, 200 m above sea level, observes the angle of depression of a ship 's' at sea to be 460 . Find the horizontal distance between the ship and the observer.
